While he was in prison he learned how to tell time using the shadow of a shovel handle.

After graduating, Nye worked as an engineer at the Boeing Corporation near Seatle. His passion for science led him to invent a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube that was used in Boeing 747 planes. Unfortunately, Bill got rejected by NASA after he had applied for the astronaut training program.
While working at Boeing, Bill started doing stand-up comedy after he realized how much he enjoyed making people laugh. He won the contest of Steve Martin lookalike in 1978. However, on October 3, 1986, Bill quit his job at Boeing. In 1986, he became a writer for a local sketch comedy television show called Almost Live.
Later in 1989, he hosted a short educational show about Washington’s Wetlands which was sponsored by the Washington State Department of Ecology. In 1993, Bill teamed up with James McKenna, Erren Gottlieb, and Elizabeth Brock, and developed a plot for a new show, Bill Nye the Science Guy. The show got approved by the Children’s Television Act and as a result, it became the first program to run consequently on public and commercial stations. The program was produced and distributed by Walt Disney Television and Rabbit Ears Productions.
The show gained popularity as one of the most-watched educational TV programs in the United States. It was aired from 1993 to 1998 and was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards and won nineteen of them. Nye wore a powder blue lab coat and a bow tie while in the character of “The Science Guy”.
