Bertinelli came into prominence as a child actress after playing the role of Barbara Cooper in the sitcom One Day at a Time. The role earned her two Golden Globes. From there, she appeared in other several sitcoms like; Sydney, Café Americain, and Touched by an Angel. In 2007, Valerie became the new spokeswoman for the Jenny Craig program. She even appeared in some of their advertisements.
In 2008, Valerie released her autobiography titled Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time. In 2009, her follow-up book titled Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge was released. Valerie joined the cast of Hot In Cleveland in 2010. She played the role of Melanie Moretti.
Aside from acting, Valarie hosts two cooking shows called Valerie’s Home Cooking and Kids Baking Championship. The show both premiered in 2015.
